The interdisciplinary performing arts and production organisation, PaXifica Performing Arts Laboratory Trust was established in New Zealand and registered as a charitable trust with the Companies Office on 29th August 2006. Its main activity was in creative moving image productions. Until recently it had undertaken commercial work for a diverse range of companies in New Zealand, and where possible the Trust also supported through its resources and skills filmmakers and those working within the performing arts. In 2025 PaXifica ceased to function as a Trust, though in 2009 PaXifica Moving Image Production had been established to specifically produce PaXifica’s own creative projects focused on dramatic video/film.

Producer & Director of PaXifica
Alexander Campbell has a diverse range of technical expertise and creativity gained through many years of experience working in various areas of the media and performance industries.
Alexander trained at the School of Fine Arts, Auckland University, New Zealand, MFA Hons., and the Drama Action Centre, Sydney, Australia. He has a broad range of experience as a director in the areas of documentary and dramatic filmmaking, mix media performance art, and experimental film. Alexander has also worked for many years as a professional actor, training and working both in Australasia and Europe.
He was the director of the visual art video production company, Constructur/list [production], NZ. 1990—94, producing media-artist work and producing and directing documentaries on the visual arts. He established the actors’ training organisation, Act_World_Wide, in Paris, 2000—2005. He lectured at the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Charles Sturt University, NSW, Australia, teaching Directing for Film and TV, Screen Acting and Devising Theatre, 2008.
Since 2009 Alexander has been producer and director of PaXifica Moving Image Production.
In carrying out all activities in which PaXifica is involved it aims:
- To honour the spirit and principles of the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiritio o Waitangi);
- To honour the terms of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990;
- To foster respect for the preservation of the eco system.
PaXifica’s logo is based on the ancient Polynesian Stick Charts and the constellation of the Southern Cross.
The Stick Charts were an ‘ocean mapping and navigation technology’ used by canoe travellers, known throughout the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Polynesia. ‘The charts represented major ocean swell patterns and the ways the islands disrupted those patterns’, says Makezine, in their Lost Knowledge section. PaXifica is situated in the Pacific and Pacific Rim and its more experimental activities are creatively navigational.
The other strong influence for our PaXifica symbol, apart from the sails of the sea-faring canoe of the early Polynesian navigators, is another important navigational tool, the celestial formation Southern Cross. And, of course, the stage and its potential for performance.
