We are pleased to have this opportunity to work with the Waiheke Theatre Company on this joint creative project. We are both enthused by the potential of our combined skills and experience, the Waiheke Theatre Company in terms of performance and PaXifica in film production, and our ability to realise a high standard of production.

The subject of the film explores several universal themes that shape society and affect us all, but it is in how they impact women and men in a particular way when related to ageing that is our interest. At a time when ‘ageing’ in western society has become of pronounced concern across the board, from young to old, and the ‘aged’ grow ever more marginalised, we want to draw attention to these issues. It’s a subject rarely explored, yet a poignant subject for many, which is why we feel it a valuable reason for making the film. We hope it will be a film which brings a little more light and understanding and through its humour some joy and leaves a lasting impression on a broad range of audiences.

The currently production will happen early in 2022.

Hori Alfred Morse fought with the Auxiliary Force during the Irish War of Independence, after serving in the armed forced in the First World War. This documentary is to be shot in Ireland, but due to the director currently being stuck in New Zealand on Waiheke Island since the level 4 lockdown, and the urgency to commence shooting, the dramatic scenes to be included in the documentary are now to be shot in New Zealand early in January 2021.

By as far as possible drawing on the talents of the local community of Waiheke Island PaXifica is currently active in bringing together actors, set designers and builders, costume design and production crew to facilitate a community project that will assist Andrew, create the material required for his project. We will also be looking to invite some local up and coming filmmakers to participate, providing an opportunity to gain some valuable experience.  The scenes will be shot on Waiheke, the principle location being Waiheke’s Artworks Theatre.

We have the rough cut of the film completed, but not being impervious to the effects of Covid 19 lockdown we are now regrettably on hold. We are very much hoping that Mark, as co-director of the project and sound designer, will be able to enter the country before too long, so we can complete the film as planned by the end of this year.

Prior to the show Alexander was responsible for the removal of the proscenium arch that had plagued the theatre for years, liberating the stage area and providing a more modern stage to the theatre. Through acquiring sponsorship from Placemakers Ltd for the Waiheke Theatre Company, Alexander was then able to design and oversaw the realisation of the most ambitious set that has been created for the theatre in many years.

In July we were fortunate again that Mark Solter was able to fly over to New Zealand from LA to contribute to the project as Director of Photography and Co-director to shoot the film, Everyone Writes Memoir. The film speaks of how Social Media can impose a distraction to attentiveness to our most treasured relationships. How addiction to the vaporous digital stories can prevent us from seizing the brightness and firmness of the ‘present’.

PaXifica was then asked to produce the musical. PaXifica was able to secure funding for both the rehearsal process and the staging of the show through the Creative Communities Scheme. The show was staged at the Artworks Theatre, Waiheke, Auckland, February 2019.
